- WAVY News 10 Wins Big at the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Awards
Tom Milbourn, news anchor for FOX 11 News at Five and Nine, is the 2009 recipient of the Carol Brewer Award, which recognizes a career of outstanding service to broadcast journalism in Wisconsin. Carol Brewer was a former broadcast editor for the Wisconsin Associated Press who died in the early 1980's. The award honors her years of service to the television and radio stations of Wisconsin. This award was presented by the Wisconsin Associated Press Broadcast Advisory Board at its banquet in Waukesha.
"I am humbled even to be considered for this award since a number of the previous recipients are journalists I've looked up to and admired since I first walked into a Wisconsin newsroom 41 years ago," Milbourn said.
Milbourn was nominated by his FOX 11 co-anchor Michelle Melby. Along with WLUK FOX 11, he has worked at WFRV in Green Bay, and at WMTV in Madison. Milbourn also serves as a part-time professor, teaching future journalists at St. Norbert College in De Pere.
April 17, 2010 - Portsmouth, VA: WAVY News 10 claimed 10 awards today at the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters Awards.
The WAVY/FOX43 news photography team scored four AP awards. The team took Superior and Meritorious honors in Feature Photography for the Old Dominion University Team Shoot by photojournalists Colin McIntyre, Matt Mrozinski, Andy Miller, Brian Parsons and Chris Reckling. The team assembled five cameras on opening night of ODU's return to college football. Additionally, LaVoy Harrell and Art Kohn also received Superior recognition in Spot Photography for ground and aerial coverage of the Wickham Supermarket fire in Newport News.
WAVY and FOX 43 have a talented team of newscast producers! This year, the Associated Press recognized WAVY News 10's 5pm newscast producer Shelley Rafferty with a Superior award for Outstanding Effort by an Individual Producer. The WAVY News 10 sports team, comprised of Sports Director Bruce Rader, Chris Reckling, Ahmed Fareed and Brian Parsons, also received recogntion for Superior Year Round Sports.
WAVY News 10 anchor Tom Schaad received Meritorious recognition in the Best News Anchor Category and reporter Andy Fox received Meritorius honors in Best Investigative Reporting for the 10 On Your Side "Dirty Dupmpsters" report. Consistent coverage of the November Nor'easter in Hampton Roads earned the Super Doppler 10 Weather Team Meritorious honors as Best Weathercast of the Year.
"It is an honor to receive this recogintion," said News Director Kathy Hostetter. "The caliber of our newscasts, weather efforts and daily reporting, photography & producing are unmatched in Hampton Roads, and we are thrilled the judges recognized that talent with all of these awards."
